WASHINGTON – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley today released the following statement regarding President Trump’s executive orders on immigration.

“We’ve seen the consequences of neglecting to enforce our immigration laws both at the border and in communities across the country. The tragic death of Sarah Root, one of my constituents, could have been avoided had the previous administration placed a higher priority on enforcing the laws on the books. No family should have to bury a child because the federal government refused to take the law seriously. President Trump’s executive orders are an important step toward securing the border, restoring the rule of law and strengthening public safety by ensuring that those who threaten the safety of our communities are no longer allowed to wreak continued havoc,” Grassley said.

Sarah Root of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was struck and killed by an undocumented immigrant who was drag racing while drunk.  The immigrant, Edwin Mejia, had a prior history of skipping court-ordered meetings, but was not considered an enforcement priority by the previous administration. He was charged with felony motor vehicle homicide, but was released on bond and is now a fugitive from the law.
