Fire Operations and Fire Safety grants have been awarded to Arthur, Blairsburg, Bloomfield, Bonaparte, Colesburg, Columbia, Dysart, Fonda, Gilbert, Imogene, Letts, Little Sioux, Lost Nation, Missouri Valley, Oskaloosa, Oto, Palo, Rockwell City, Sigourney, Stanton, Templeton and West Point. These funds can be used to train firefighting personnel, establish wellness and fitness programs for firefighters, and purchase firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment.
The community of Orient has been awarded a Firefighting Vehicles Grant. These funds will be used to purchase new firefighting vehicle.
"Local firefighters are on the frontline of safety efforts in these communities. We need to make sure that they are properly equipped and have the appropriate training so that they are ready for the unexpected," Grassley said. "These grants will provide needed support to the local fire departments that help ensure that our communities are prepared to deal with disasters."

Grassley said that FEMA received more than 19,500 applications and is in the process of awarding 5,500 grants. The awards represent a $360 million investment to the enhancement of local fire and emergency medical services. This is the sixth round of Assistance to Firefighters Grants awarded this year.
