WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley today said that his office will be participating in the Linn County Department of Veterans Affairs “Stand Down” for veterans who are homeless or in need.
The Stand Down is an overnight event, and will provide a number of social services such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, haircuts, showers, VA and Social Security Benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other services intended to aid veterans. The event’s goal is to enhance employment and training opportunities and promote self-sustainment for homeless and needy veterans. Forty human service agencies from around the area will participate.
Grassley will sponsor a booth at the Stand Down, which will provide privacy releases, and other information for those who need assistance in collecting benefits.
“The Linn County Stand Down will provide many beneficial resources, as well as valuable tools to help those Veterans, and other individuals in need,” Grassley said. “I hope veterans will take advantage of those services my office as well as the other agencies can offer."
Funding for the Stand Down is made available by an $11,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and by an $8,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.
The Linn County Stand Down is open to all Veterans and their families, as well as other individuals who are homeless or in need. The event will take place from October 27-28, at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 50 2nd Avenue Bridge, in Cedar Rapids.
