Grassley: More Than $2 Million to Iowa from U.S. Department of Education


WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded grants totaling $2,135,914 to Iowa through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program.
 
“These funds will help improve the physical education for K-12 students, to help students appreciate the positive benefits of physical activity, as well as help provide first generation college students a greater opportunity to receive a doctoral degree” Grassley said.
 
The Carol M. White Physical Education Program provides funds to local schools and community based organizations to initiate, expand or improve physical education programs for K-12 students in order to help students make progress toward meeting state standards for physical education.
 
The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program provides grants to institutions of higher education to prepare low-income, first generation college students, and students from groups underrepresented in graduate education, for doctoral study.
 
The grant funds from the U.S. Department of Education will be distributed as shown below.
 
  • A $485,680 grant to the Des Moines Independent Community Schools through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.
  • A $498,176 grant to the IowaAssociation for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.
  • A $347,457 grant to the Keokuk Community School District through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.
  • A $267,334 grant to the Marion Independent School District through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.
  • A $305,823 grant to the Okoboji Community Schools through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.
  • A $231,444 grant to the Universityof Northern Iowa through the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program.
