Grassley: More Than $80 Million to Iowa from FEMA

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated funds totaling more than $80 million to Iowa for disaster recovery. The funding accounts for 90 percent of the costs associated with the projects.

“These funds will help these Iowa communities and the University of Iowa get back on their feet and allow them to continue the arduous recovery work,” Grassley said. “This will be a boost to these communities.”

After areas are declared presidential disaster areas and FEMA and the state and local governments have prepared preliminary damage estimates, the federal government is obligated through the Stafford Act to pay for 75 percent of the public assistance costs.

Grassley, along with the rest of the congressional delegation and Governor Chet Culver, successfully fought for the federal share of the costs to be increased to 90 percent because of the extensive damage.
