Grassley: More Counties Added to Presidential Disaster Declaration

WASHINGTON—Senator Chuck Grassley today said that President George Bush has amended his May 28 Disaster Declaration to include more counties for Individual and Public Assistance. Grassley has continued to push the Administration to declare more flooded counties as federal disaster areas.

“The President today saw first-hand the destruction caused by the floods.  These designations are necessary to help these areas recover,” Grassley said. “His continued quick action is appreciated.”

Counties added today for Individual Assistance under the most recent federal declaration include Hancock, Kossuth, Lee, Madison, Marshall and Wapello. Individual Assistance is federal assistance available to individuals and households.

Counties added today for Public Assistance under the most recent federal declaration include Benton, Bremer, Cass, Cedar, Clinton, Decatur, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Mahaska, Montgomery, Poweshiek and Wapello.  Public assistance allows state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations to receive assistance on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the flooding.

Grassley encourages everyone with losses to register for any available federal assistance.

“It doesn’t cost anything to sign up and may save some time and anxiety in the future.  People may never need the assistance, but it’s nice to be covered if it’s necessary,” Grassley said
