Grassley requested $7.5 million to build a new facility for UNI's Existing Business Enhancement Program. He requested an additional $500,000 annually for the center's programming costs. The programs in the new facility would provide training, education and practical research that focuses on the growth and development of existing businesses.
"The center would help businesses throughout the Midwest create and retain jobs, train employees, increase sales, expand markets and practice environmental responsibility," Grassley said. "Adding value to our existing businesses is an investment in the economic development of Iowa and surrounding states."
Grassley also requested $1.4 million to establish a center to promote energy efficiency and alternative energy use.
UNI's Center for Energy and Environmental Education would conduct research on clean combustion technology, coal, and biomass conversion. The Center also would promote energy alternatives and conservation through education and awareness campaigns.
"Iowa has great potential to be a leader in alternative energy and energy efficiency," Grassley said. "This center will help Iowa utilize that potential by focusing on the development of novel energy technologies and significant improvements in energy efficiency."
Grassley's letter was sent to Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada and Pete Domenici of New Mexico, who as chairman and ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development are responsible for drafting the federal government's spending plan for energy and water related projects in the next fiscal year. The appropriations process begins each spring and is typically completed at the end of each congressional session.
