WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) issued the following statement after President Trump discussed immigration policy priorities today in the White House Rose Garden.

“We need an immigration system for the 21st century – one that puts American workers first, welcomes talent from around the world and preserves our longstanding hospitality to immigrants who follow the rules. This would allow Iowa to attract physicians for underserved rural areas, engineers and scientists, entrepreneurs, and community and faith leaders. It’d also protect the wages and futures of American workers. I’m encouraged by President Trump’s commitment to a merit-based immigration system that prioritizes skills, but I’m reserving judgment until I see the full details of the plan. Focusing on skills and employment viability, and preserving visas for immediate family members without decreasing the number of annual green cards across the board is a reasonable approach. We must address the crisis at the border in a sustainable way and ensure officials have the tools and resources they need to secure the border. I look forward to working with President Trump and my colleagues on this plan.”
