WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Tobey Allison Yates and John “Jack” Linden Worthington have received appointments to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for the 2015-2016 school year.
“Admission to the service academies is highly competitive and a great honor,” Grassley said. “Students work very hard to earn this kind of opportunity. I wish Tobey and Jack well and thank them for their commitment to serve our nation.”
Yates is the daughter of Honey and Arthur Yates, Jr. of Underwood. She will graduate in May from Underwood High School. Yates participated in the National Honor Society, Spanish club, student council, and basketball. She also earned two varsity letters for cross country and four varsity letters for softball. Yates also works at Hy-Vee.
Worthington is the son of Glynis and Wayne Worthington of Hudson. He will graduate from Hudson High School in May. Worthington participated in the American Legion Boys State 2014, the Boy Scouts of America Troop 313, and the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program in Marshalltown. At Hudson High School, Worthington participated in football, wrestling, and trapshooting, which he served as team captain in 2015. He also participated in Brooklyn, Guernsey, Malcom (BGM) track, cross country, and wrestling; he earned a varsity letter for each and was a district qualifier for wrestling.
Yates and Worthington were among the 37 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies. Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley’s website.
For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.
