WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Michael Finbar Berry of Cedar Rapids has received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., for the 2016-2017 school year.

Berry is the son of Mary Anne and Sean Berry.  He will graduate in May from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids.  Berry has participated in cross country, serving as captain; track, serving as distance captain; swimming; show choir and concert choir.  He serves as student body president, in the student senate and as the service chair of the Interact Service Club.   Berry is a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National Council on Youth Leadership and the Boy Scouts of America, where he is an Eagle Scout.  Berry also works as a lifeguard.

“Students work very hard to earn this kind of opportunity.  Admission to the service academies is highly competitive and a great honor,” Grassley said.   “I wish Michael well and thank him for his commitment to serve our nation.”

Berry was among the 41 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies.  Upon receiving an appointment, the student then decides whether to attend the academy.  Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley’s website

For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.
