Iowa Fire Departments to Receive More Than $400,000

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will award grants totaling $423,276 to Iowa fire departments.

The Department of Homeland Security will distribute the money as shown below.

• The Canton-Benton-Shellsburg Fire Department will receive $51,674 to purchase gear and protective clothing, and to fund training.

• Fonda Fire Department & EMS Service, Inc. will receive $254,600 to purchase a fire fighting vehicle.

• Weldon Fire & EMS will receive $117,002 to purchase gear, protective clothing and a fire fighting vehicle, and to fund training.

“The safety of our communities depends on firefighters’ ability to access the training and equipment they need to do their jobs,” Grassley said. “These funds will help Iowa firefighters save lives.”

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
