More Than $1 Million to University of Iowa and Iowa State University


WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded competitive grants totaling $1,022,637 to the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.



The funds will be distributed as shown below.



•$328,362 to Iowa State University from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences for a program titled, “Role of Prion Protein in Manganese Neurotoxicity.”

•$187,500 to the University of Iowa from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for an alcohol research program titled, “Role of MicroRNAs in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.”

•$187,500 to the University of Iowa from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for an alcohol research program titled, “Prevention of Alcohol Neurotoxicity by PDE4 Inhibitor.”

•$319,275 to the University of Iowa from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for a pharmacology, physiology and biological chemistry research program titled, “Nkx2-5 and congenital heart defects in Xenopus.”



Each year, thousands of local Iowa entities, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
