Nearly $13 Million to Improve Iowa Buses

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration has awarded four competitive grants totaling $12,459,306 to Iowa through the State of Good Repair Selection Program.

“This funding is intended to increase the safety and efficiency of public transportation in Iowa” Grassley said.

The funds will be distributed as follows:

• Ames will receive $3,688,000

• Cedar Rapids will receive $1,468,000

• Dubuque will receive $2,303,306

• Iowa Department of Transportation will receive $5 million

According to the Department of Transportation, the purpose of the State of Good Repair program is to replace, rehabilitate, and purchase buses and related equipment and to construct or rehabilitate bus-related facilities.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
