RE: Immigration Debate in Senate
DA: April 7, 2006
Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa released the following statement after two cloture motions on immigration legislation failed in the Senate. Grassley is a senior member of the Judiciary Committee.
“After two weeks of debate in the Senate, the immigration bill has come to a standstill. Democrats wouldn’t let us vote on amendments, and spent their time obstructing our reform efforts. Instead of being scared to vote on some tough issues that would actually strengthen the bill, they should have let the deliberative body deliberate. I don’t know why they were afraid of amendments that would have made the bill better. We take tough votes all the time in the Senate, that’s what our job is all about.”
