Welfare-to-Work Funds for Iowa
The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that Iowa Workforce Development will receive over $8.3 million to enhance and expand programs such as Iowa's Family Investment Program (FIP) and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). The federal grant is being matched by $4.1 million in state funds. The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 authorized the U.S. Department of Labor to provide these Welfare-to-Work Grants to states and local communities in order to help them move more citizens from welfare and into the workforce. In response to this announcement, Sen. Chuck Grassley issued the following statement.
"Iowa has been a leader in moving individuals from welfare to work. This award will help achieve even greater gains in helping to make individuals and families self-reliant. When Iowans are able to achieve financial stability and independence, self esteem is enhanced and families are strengthened."
