In this video address, Senator Chuck Grassley discusses the need for a meaningful congressional debate on immigration reform and reiterates points he made during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on February 13, saying that to be successful, policy makers need to learn from mistakes in the 1986 immigration law. Grassley also said that enforcement of laws already on the books was critical to any effort to reform the immigration system. In his statement, Grassley reiterated that Americans need a more secure border and that the E-Verify program should be used by every business in America to certify work eligibility of employees. He also advocated giving high skilled and low skilled workers legal avenues to enter the United States as part of the reform effort. Grassley said immigration legislation should go through regular order in the Senate to achieve a thorough debate, including amendments in the committee of jurisdiction and on the Senate floor. Grassley serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has primary jurisdiction of federal immigration.
