WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $159,300 grant to the North Polk Community School District, which serves Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City and Sheldahl.
According to the Department of Education, the school district will use the funds to create policies and an environment which support improved health, fitness and nutrition.
“One in every three American children is now overweight or obese. Educating kids about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle should help reverse that trend,” Grassley said.
Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants and loans from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
