WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $160,000 grant to the University of Iowa through the Education Research Training program.
“These funds will give educators an opportunity to test new lessons to help improve students’ understandings of science and address the national need for math and science understanding,” Grassley said.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the University of Iowa will use the funds to help pay for a new initiative by the College of Education to apply a “Science Writing Heuristic” approach by embedding science argument within typical inquiry lessons in 48 Iowa elementary schools.
Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants and loans from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
