Grassley: $580,000 to Newton from Department of Commerce

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration, has awarded a $580,000 grant to Trinity in Newton.

The funds are being used to help develop a parcel of land to provide storage space for Trinity, a manufacturer of wind towers. The project is expected to generate $21 million in private investment and create 140 new jobs.

“These funds will help create new jobs in Newton while helping to expand renewable energy sources like wind energy. As the father of the wind energy production tax credit, I think it is great to see a community work together for renewable energy development, especially clean-burning wind energy with its endless supply,” Grassley said. “Wind energy has not only helped power many parts of Iowa, but it has provided a great deal of economic activity in communities like Newton.”

The federal wind production tax credit, which Grassley authored, is arguably the number one reason for the influx of wind production and manufacturing in Iowa. Iowa is currently the fourth leading state in total installed wind power capacity. Iowa also has six planned or existing manufacturing facilities.
