Grassley: Des Moines receives $79,719 for additional emergency communications center

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs has released a $79,719 grant to Des Moines through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.

The funds will help Des Moines create an alternate emergency dispatch site. The primary police and fire emergency communications center is located in downtown Des Moines as is the alternate emergency dispatch site located in the Des Moines Fire Station #1. The close proximity of the primary and alternate dispatch sites dictates the need for an additional emergency communications center.

“Record flooding this summer demonstrates the need for Iowa’s communities to be prepared for the worst,” Grassley said. “This grant will help make sure Des Moines’s first responders react quickly and appropriately no matter what the situation.”

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and improve the criminal justice system.
