WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that workers in Newton are eligible to apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance and Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance.
Workers from Maytag Corportation in Newton who totally or partially lost their jobs on or after December 24, 2006 through December 26, 2008 as well as leased workers from Henkel Corportation, Randstad Corportation, Ryerson Steel, Chem-Tool, Barnes Electric, Mid Iowa Tools, Kimco Janitorial, Johnston Controls and Baker Electric who totally or partially lost their jobs on November 16, 2005 through December 26, 2008 are eligible to apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance and Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance.
“The assistance will give all of the eligible workers who were employed at Maytag an opportunity to receive training for new skills so they can compete for new jobs in the future. It will help these employees continue to get back on their feet,” Grassley said.
The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program is a federal program that provides aid to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports. The TAA program offers a variety of benefits and reemployment services to help unemployed workers prepare for and obtain suitable employment. Workers may be eligible for training, job search and relocation allowances, income support, and other reemployment services.
Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance provides assistance for workers over the age of 50 and retraining may not be appropriate.
