"Today's release shows what can happen when investigators focus too narrowly. Investigators targeted one employee, Dr. Wen Ho Lee, and ultimately failed to prove allegations of espionage against him. In the meantime, other possible areas of investigation escaped scrutiny.
"It's critical for those charged with protecting our national security to exhibit the right amount of focus on the right places. In this case, the FBI spent years trying to pin security leaks on just one area of inquiry. The case didn't stick, and the FBI came up empty.
"I hope the FBI and the Department of Energy will learn from the mistakes identified in the Bellows Report. When the final report is released and its recommendations are made public, I'll call upon FBI Director Mueller to make sure the FBI follows through on those recommendations. I'll also follow up with him on the status of several other important and necessary changes that need to be made within the Bureau."
