WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the U.S. Department of Education have selected Sandy Huang of Ames High School in Ames and Stephen Henrich of Newman High School in Mason City to represent Iowa in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Huang and Henrich were chosen from more than 3,000 applicants based on outstanding scores on the SAT or ACT assessments, school reports and transcripts, leadership activities, and contributions to family, school and community.
"Congratulations to Sandy and Stephen on this great honor," Grassley said. "They are role models for their peers. I hope they enjoy their visit to Washington and can explore the many learning experiences in this city as they attend events for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program."
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored more than 6,000 graduating high school seniors for academic excellence, artistic accomplishments, and civic contributions since its inception in 1964. The scholars will be recognized in Washington, D.C., June 20th – 24th, and will participate in a series of educational, cultural and celebratory events.
Each scholar also nominates one exceptional teacher to receive the program's Teacher Recognition Award. Huang nominated Michael Lazere and Henrich nominated Gary Nyhus.
